Situated close to Traprain Law, a volcanic rock formation rich in history, myth and miracles – where one of the largest hoards of Roman silver was unearthed in 1919 – Traprain Tea is a small tea garden growing Camellia sinensis and producing Scottish grown teas. With the help of many friends and family we planted our first tea plants in 2016. It was a rocky start for the young plants with some harsh winters and dry springs, but each year we learn something new about how to better accommodate our new guests.

Traprain Tea is part of the association of Scottish tea growers, Tea Scotland; with over 12 members we aim to support one another in the growing of tea and set standards in Scottish tea production.  Growing tea is a slow business and yields are low, but the teas produced under the Scottish climate are quite unique and offer something completely new to the world of tea.

In 2021 we collaborated with members of the association to produce our first tea, The Gathering, which pools leaf from many gardens across Scotland. Processed at the Scottish Tea Factory in Perthshire under the expert eye of Beverly Wainwright, it represents an important milestone and the first opportunity to share the leaves of our labours with the wider world.
